Deep State are streaming their debut album Thought Garden in its entireity via New Noise. Due for release on Friendship Fever on 14 April, the LP features some of the best, pure-bent, rock joy heard in a generation in their portion of America’s east coast. The band consists of Athens, Georgia residents Taylor Chmura (guitar, vocals), Christian Deroeck (bass), Michael Gonzalez (drums) and Ryan Gray Moore (guitar).
“I’ve had a few albums roughly written since 2014, and slowly we have been sifting through that wasteland (my writings). We became much more collaborative in a band sense. Instead of me bringing the songs to Christian, Michael, and Ryan and playing exactly what I had written in my room, I would bring a song to them and it we would make it evolve in the practice space. At the end of the day our mode is supposed to be as simple as possible so as not to get distracted.I read ‘Narcissus and Goldmund’ by Hermann Hesse while we were on tour in 2015. There’s a beautiful passage about Goldmund realizing that a life of sinless solitude (‘laying out a lonely harmonious thought-garden’) would not be as human as learning from chaos and self-destruction.I’ve developed an obsession and fondness for thinking of the mind as a garden. Our first full-length, ‘Nice,’ is about voicing frustration outward; ‘Thought Garden’ seeks to be more introspective.”
