LIGHTS GO OUT #5
First issue of this impressive zine I have seen. There’s a friendly, conversational attitude that Editor, Mr. T, has instilled between the covers – be it the columns, reviews or even the interviews. This issue sees chats with THURSDAY, FIGHT LIKE APES, REVENGE OF THE PSYCHOTRONIC MAN, LOSTBOYFOUND, some dude who used to be in way over-rated Ska creatures KING PRAWN and Karyn Parsons who was in The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air apparently. The questions seem to follow the standard format, are never too in-depth and work well for newer bands in particular. The reviews are good – they are honest and don’t wallow in pretentiousness. Layouts are simple and effective with a nice small font to cram lots in while the print job is sharp, highly contrasted and clear. The columns were good (if a little unfocused in a couple) and generally this reminded me of early issues of Charred Remains. Not a bad thing at all if you remember the classic that was CR. My BIG criticism though is no postal address, which is something essential to promote in your zine – especially in the print format.

This zine is like a treasure chest. it seems totally standard from the outset but its FULL, PACKED FULL, of awesome stuff. theres interviews with Jim out of Pennywise about being a dad, North Lincoln, kids tv presenter Sarah Jane Honeywell (who i dont remember) as well as articles on the best boozers in slough, the best northern punk gigs of 2007, a movie blog, albums that changed your life, about a MILLION columns aswell as record, book and movie reviews. choca bloc eh.

How good is it to have a real proper old school zine drop through the door, flyers falling out of the envelope (were the stamps soaped? Didn’t check). There was a time when we couldn’t go to a gig without someone selling us a zine (or trading one), there was a time when zines like this would be a daily event – the lifeblood of a real alternative underground and we need more of them. (Nice to see a George Tabb flyer in the package). Classic old school cut ‘n paste hand made punk zine – little hard on the eyes, typo mistakes that are always there however much you check before you hit the photocopier. The obligatory column section, CD and live reviews, opinionated rants, personal thought, DIY punk rock goodness. Interviews with Jim from Pennywise, The Griswalds, North Lincoln, Peng, Sarah Jane Honeywell… The web is all well and good, great for those instant links and constant updates, but we still need printed DIY zines and there’s nothing quite like reading a proper one (like this) on the train home from a gig is there? Lights Go Out is a classic messy A5 punk zine, nothing that different, nothing massively radical but so so positively good to see and yes, a fine and recommended read.

Did there used to be so many hate lists in zines or did Morgenmuffel #16 inadvertently start something? Lights Go Out is 40% ranting about stuff that annoys them, including t-shirt prices, tall people at gigs, MTV, umbrellas, poker… I can pretty much ring my Grandma if I want to hear lots of unrelated things get moaned about, but there’s a solid Strike Anywhere interview, 12 pages of reviews and a ‘go vegan’ article that isn’t as generic as they usually are. Also interviews with Kid Carpet, Just Panic and Jet from Gladiators.

Good old Mr. T, I’m glad that he’s had the staying power to carry on with this fine zine. This is another of those top notch publications you would not want to be without these days. It’s another one packed with interesting items and bands, but also some weird stuff, Mr. T was obviously dropped on his head as a toddler. Another pretty top class list of bands featured, with The Arteries, Tony Sly (NUFAN), Joey Cape (Lagwagon). The Dangerous Summer, Hearts Under Fire, Manda Rin (bis) and ICH. I am especially envious of a couple of those bands he’s interviewed, although to be fair they would probably have agreed to be interviewed by me, if I had had the presence of mind to ask them myself! See, another zine with columnists – see they are all doing it, perhaps I should give it a go? Gig reviews and it amuses me that Mr. T reviews his own band! (Although to be fair, he is probably a harsher critic of himself than someone else might be). There is plenty of other stuff which makes it another zine it takes me a fair while to work my way thru’. And based in Newbury, there is a lot of overlap between us and it’s interesting to get that other perspective.

What can I say about LGO zine that I haven’t said before in previous reviews. Mr. T and co always put out one of the best UK punk zines, always a pleasure when one pops through my door. As usual I read this over the course of 2 days in 2 sittings, that’s not to say there ain’t a lot in here cause there is shit loads in lovely small print, I just find it a very hard zine to put down! Loads of great interviews again, all of which in the LGO tradition of being short and sweet, this issue the likes of The Arteries, Joey Cape, Tony Sly, The Dangerous Summer, ICH and Manda Rin from the mighty BIS! There is the usual reviews of gigs, records and zines, all of which seem bigger than usual and a few columns including musical guilty pleasures, one gripe of which, Mr. T forgot to put my bit about liking Prince in, or maybe he just decided to cut it!

“We totally loved Lights Go Out, and going through the zines we swapped, I think it’s definatley up there with one of the best, and you were by far the nicest people, as a lot of people were very stuck up and horrid about our zine!!”

Lights Go Out # 7
Definitely one of the best punk-focused zines the UK has to offer, Mr. T returns for a seventh outing of Lights Go Out and it’s as good a read as ever. Content wise it follows a very similar pattern to ASFAR, with interviews, gig/CD/zine reviews and some columns (more columns that I ever manage, so I feel well and truly put to shame!). Managing a typeface that’s even smaller than the one I use is no mean feat, but in fairness you don’t have to squint too much to read and the quality of the writing makes it worthwhile. Interviews with the likes of The Arteries, Joey Cape (Lagwagon) and Tony Sly (No Use For A Name) are all solid, though I kind of wish a couple had been a bit longer and more in-depth. That’s a minor gripe though, cause this is a great zine, make sure you pick it up.

Lights Go Out # 7
Having only recently picked up this latest issue it’s clear to see that this Newbury based ‘zine has come on well since its earlier issues. There’s still the problem of a small font making some articles hard to read but when that means you get a sh*t load more to read it’s not a totally bad thing. Interviews with the likes of No Use For A Name’s Tony Sly and Lagwagon’s Joey Cape, as well as rising UK talent such as The Arteries and Hearts Under Fire make it an absorbing read. With plenty of columns and reviews of albums, gigs and other zines, your lights will be on ’til the early hours reading this one.

A damn fine read every time. A one line summary totally fails to adequately convey the depth and breadth of humour and ideas covered. That can only be done by getting a copy and reading it for yourself.

The diversity of music covered in the zine is a real plus point, and the frequency of new issues arriving always amazes me. I hope this zine continues for a good many years to come.

This awesome zine, which really is a bit like a tardis, seemingly small and compact, but inside, so much material. There is always plenty of interesting stuff to get your teeth into.

Always a firm favourite of mine. Issue 8 carries on with the usual top quality. Really a bloody awesome read as per usual, Mr. T should be proud of the reputation he is rapidly getting for putting out this regular top quality zine.

Another shit hot issue of Lights Go Out here, really always impressed by what Mr. T does. Ace as usual.

Wow, either Mr. T is getting more prolific or I’m getting slacker, either way he has managed to release two zines in the space of me releasing the one. Again, another corker of an issue here, packed full of more interviews than usual, all short but very sweet. Another whole heap of reviews and columns, once more makes a superb issue.

There might only be a few paper zines around these days but they are generally excellent and Lights Go Out is one of the best.
An essential supplement for anyone with a serious interest and passion for cool, local, DIY Music

Lights Go Out #11, 12, 13. £1
Crikey oh riley, L.G.O. are rapidly closing on us, Mr. T and co are certainly banging them out with a lot more regularity than me here at Peril Towers. In fact I can’t believe that 3 issues have come out since the last Peril! This ain’t no half assed attempt though, Issue 11 (like every issue before) has been tenderly made and is packed full of interesting goodies. Interviews this time include Propagandhi, Antillectual, Reel Big Fish, All Time Low, Chas Palmer-Williams and the usual unexpected ones, this time Alice Gold and Kate Voegele (from some shitty programme called One Tree Hill) There are more than the usual rants and reviews which I lapped up so much, I do believe I read this is one sitting! Lovely stuff.
Issue 12 had loads more interviews this time; including The Get Up Kids, Fights And Fires, Lower Than Atlantis, The Undertones and shit loads more. #13 had The Computers, Atlas Losing Grip, Vanilla Pod and Dirty Revolution. All have heaps of articles and reviews as per usual, making this the best and most prolific zine that money can buy. Good work Mr. T!
