“Dr. Frank” Portman is quick to tell you this isn’t a MTX reunion, “We never did go away. With the collapse of the music industry, during the release of our last album in 2004; it made it very difficult to fund recordings and at the time I embarked on a successful literary career.”
Portman, think of him as one part Joe Strummer, one part Judy Blume, saw his literary career take off with the critical acclaimed young adult novel, King Dork. Fans young and old flocked to King Dork. It even attracted the attention of Will Ferrell and his production company, Gary Sanchez Productions, who optioned the film rights. The project is now in development with Miguel Arteta, director of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day & Youth in Revolt.
In this sequel, King Dork Approximately, Tom Henderson enters the world of Clearview High and it’s inner horrors of young adulthood. Through the course of the novel Portman as Tom Henderson writes several songs for the character’s imaginary bands. Dr. Frank has channeled the songs from the book into the King Dork Approximately full length record.
Portman has interesting ideas when it comes to pairing a book with a record, “Connecting the rock and roll and songwriting with the novels has been something I’ve always wanted to do. It’s quite a complex project and I haven’t quite gotten my act together on it before. It’s only now that I finally figured out a way to join them up.”
Why release the new record as an exclusive with the book? “No one knows how to sell records any more, and to a degree the same goes for books. We’re trying to figure out a way to do it that is interesting and suits the material!”
Coinciding with the release of King Dork Approximately, Doctor Frank will be taking the band on the road with select tour dates across North America! (Listed below)
