Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett graced Radio City Music Hall with their “Cheek to Cheek” tour 2015 in NYC. The 32 song set included solos by members of the live 40 person orchestra (two bands—The Tony Bennett Quartet and Brain Newman Quintet) as well as solos by Gaga and Bennett. Guitarist Gray Sargent’s solo of “Sing you Sinners” was bar none, transcending generation gaps and eras in time.
The duets were addictive as well as infectious with the audience sitting in the sold out theatre, singing along. Gaga stated “What a privilege to sing at Radio City Music Hall, in my home town, New York City.”
With a sixty-year age difference, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga proved that the power in a love of jazz is timeless. The cheeky duo began their set with “Anything Goes,” showing a sincere connection between the stars. Gagas wit, and Bennetts charm carried the audience between the songs. Their contrasting vocal style seemed perfectly harmonious, creating highs and lows in octaves, bringing shivers in my body and tears to my eyes.
Gagas many outfits were hand sewn with Swarovski crystals and gorgeous plume, perfectly fitted and caressing the ground as she walked with elegance through her numbers. Her aura was timeless, classic, and awe inspiring. Her many looks supported her strong, classic voice, which was dissonant yet supportive of the modern outspoken Gaga I had come to love—this added dimension to her character only made me love her more.
My favorite song was Gaga in closing “La Vie En Rose.” Her voice was angelic, giving the French anthem energy and life. Another favorite was “Bang Bang” (a Sonny and Cher classic), which Gaga sang in a lounge style act.
Bennett’s performance of “For Once in my life” was to die for—completely loved by the diverse audience.
In whole, the show was evidence of sincere affection between the stars not only personally but also in a mutual love of Jazz.
