Newton Faulkner + Sam Brookes
Ipswich, Corn Exchange 24/02/14
As the light dimmed in the sold out Ipswich Corn Exchange, Sam Brookes took to the stage to open up a night of entertainment for all lucky enough to have made it along. Everyone stood in silence as the one man and his trusty guitar began to show his incredibly well disciplined voice either that or his trousers were of a shrinking variety! As Sam‘s set progressed it was clear he has talent partially aiding couples to show public affection (insert Drop Dead Fred style puke). I would say Sam‘s style is acoustic folk lullaby, pleasant, inoffensive and repetitive. You know, the sort of thing you can play to your Gran! Let me compare thee to a colour – beige, to a food – a Fruit Pastille ice lolly, to an animal – a tortoise… basically good at what he does but nothing to shout about.
Then we got to Newton Faulkner, he provided a small portion of ball’s, more upbeat and toe tapping occasions with a quick break to pour his cuppa. No loop pedals and using his guitar in numerous ways (not just strumming like common artist’s). Technically Newton is amazing and really worth a watch. The Justin Timberlake cover was different, faster yet still enough about it to keep the crowd interested. Comparing Newton to a colour –lilac, to a food – soufflé topped with a sprinkle of cracked black pepper (I believe they can be quite tricky?) I digress, to sum up this show did not make my ears bleed and I have come away from it having learnt that the guitar can be played in multiple ways which blew my mind.
