I was really saddened to hear about the tragic death of Nick Mann, editor of A Short Fanzine About Rocking. Not only was ASFAR one of my favourite zines about, Nick had become a good friend over the past few years and I still can’t quite believe I’m not going to see his face at a show again. Nick was one of the most genuine chaps around and did so much for the UK music scene with ASFAR. His passionate approach to music and of course the love he had of Shrewsbury Town really did make him one of the best around. It still doesn’t seem real. The fact that we won’t get to hang out at shows and chat about hardcore bands still hasn’t quite sunk in. I was fortunate enough to be part of Team ASFAR a couple of years back as well, competing in a football tournament which was a real honour. Nick gave me the chance to play (and score) at Wembley! It still counts, even if it was in the sports complex they’ve built in part of the car park. I’m going to miss seeing his updates on lower league football as he travelled around the country following Shrewsbury. I still remember the time I spotted him at a cash point in Camden on our way to a hardcore show and did the classic finger in the back, gimme all that money scam on him. The UK scene really has lost one of the nicest guys around. My thoughts go out to his wife, Jen and all of his family, I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through. And of course his friends, which I am proud to have been one off. RIP dude, really gonna miss ya!
