PETROL GIRLS release ‘Restless’ – new single & music video for Halloween: https://youtu.be/ZC5NFU2m4jQ
‘Restless’ is the latest single to be lifted from feminist post hardcore group Petrol Girls’ forthcoming debut album ‘Talk of Violence’ which will be released via Bomber Music on 18th November, 2016. It’s characteristically visceral and the accompanying video embodies the theme of the song. As vocalist Ren Aldridge explains “It’s about the female orgasm from the perspective of a werewolf that likes to burn down government buildings. It’s a demand for pleasure in sex and a statement that the liberation of women is central to overthrowing the white supremacist capitalist patriarchy. For me, it’s all about my experiences during the anti-austerity movement in London around 2010/11, which was a key part of my political development, especially in terms of thinking about how violence is defined.”
Caustic and pertinent, Petrol Girls’ live show has to be seen in the flesh to really be experienced. They have most recently been on the road in mainland Europe as support to the legendary Dead Kennedys and the UK will get its chance to experience Petrol Girls’ live show before the end of the year as they’ve announced a special show at Birthdays in London on 14th December.
Petrol Girls combine manic jagged rhythms with vocals that range from furious screaming to intricate melodies and harmonies. Influenced by Refused, White Lung, Bikini Kill, Fugazi, RVIVR, Propagandhi, At The Drive-In and War On Women, Petrol Girls have sculpted a sound and a performance that is not only explosive, but highly detailed and raucous. They identify as a feminist band and draw on personal experiences to challenge and ridicule sexism, as well as exploring wider political themes, such as alienation, mental health and the current anti-austerity movement. Sometimes desperate and sometimes defiant.
