Tiny Engines recently announced the sophomore album by Adult Mom. The label will issue the the new LP, Soft Spots, May 19th.
Adult Mom began as the solo project of Stephanie Knipe in a Purchase College dorm room in 2012. Adult Mom now falls between the playful spectrum of solo project and collaborative band with beloved friends and musicians Olivia Battell, Mike Dvorscak, and Bruce Hamilton. Through reflections and explorations of the personal and hidden, the crux of the writing produced by Knipe is focused on excavation. The dredging out of secrets, putting it all in a pan, waiting for the gold to rise. Honesty and intimacy form as Knipe writes clever pop songs that offer a glimpse into the journey of a gender-weird queer navigating through heartache, trauma and subsequent growth.
With their debut LP, Momentary Lapse of Happily, Adult Mom bravely shined a light on the darkness and allowed the listener to experience and feel those moments along with them. Soft Spots, the project’s sophomore LP, is an exploration into the physical and emotional acts of opening up, the vulnerability that produces love, and then ache. With this record, Knipe proclaims that everybody has soft spots. Spots that get cared for and tended to, that grow and fade, that produce feeling that can linger for years and years. Knipe shares with us their process of learning how to cradle and understand their own softness without finality, a story without an end.

Blood Command have premiered the second single from their forthcoming album ‘Quitters Don’t Smoke’, with Kerrang!
Speaking about the single the band said, “If you quit smoking you’re a quitter, right? And no one wants to be a quitter,” says singer Yngve Andersen. “This song is about judging others. Minding the splinter in others eye, and deny the fucking forrest in your own. It’s also about lost impossible love and the road it leads to destruction </3”
Following the recent announcement of their first record in five years, Blood Command have now also announced the artwork and tracklisting for their forthcoming album ‘Cult Drugs’.
The tracklisting is as follows:
1. Ctrl + Art + Delete
2. Cult Drugs
3. Quitters Don´t Smoke
4. Nervous Laughter
5. Gang Signs
6. You Can’t Sit With Us
7. The Secret Impresses No One
8. White Skin // Tanned Teeth
9. Initiation Tape #1
10. (The World Covered In) Purple Shrouds
New album due out 28th April 2017
Pre-order via Fysisk Format HERE.
The band have also been announced as support to Boston Manor on tour in May, amongst other live dates including Impericon Festival and Download, with more to come. Casey’s new single ‘Little Bird’, taken from their debut, considers the feeling of helplessness that results from knowing a loved one is in emotional distress. Vocalist Tom Weaver says it’s about “being too emotionally naïve or unprepared to help support them through it.” Typically heart-wrenching, ‘Little Bird’ exemplifies the band’s emotionally driven, cathartic approach.

Empty Lungs have shared the video for lead single, ‘Don’t Get It’, from their ‘Don’t Get It’ EP today, to coincide with the band kicking off their mainland UK tour.
Watch the video for ‘Don’t Get It’ here: https://youtu.be/
“The song is basically a f**k you to a culture that warps young people into thinking that self-image and selfishness are the core values of our modern society,” say the band of the single. “Those kinds of attitudes create an atmosphere that alienates anyone that doesn’t fit the mould. The youth culture that we love revolves around tolerance, art, activism and social change. Unfortunately, these aren’t the dreams being sold to many of us.”
‘Don’t Get It’ is this weeks Tip Of The Week from BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens: http://www.bbc.co.

Having only released one previous single (‘Eleanor’), which earned them plaudits from the likes of DIY, The 405, BBC 6 Music and more, Essex four piece Wayde are now ready to unleash their new Lucky Aide EP. Recorded in guitarist/vocalist Tyrone Foster’s flat in Stoke Newington, in between the banging on ceilings and floors from disgruntled neighbours, Wayde’s sound is an amalgamation of sardonic indie, enveloping shoegaze and psych-infused grunge.
Channelling influences from the likes of The Rentals, Hüsker Dü, Teenage Fanclub and Pavement, there is a nostalgic comfort amongst Wayde’s combination of warm guitars, mid-tempo grooves and vocals, which are lyrically sharp, saccharine and melodically contagious. The new EP draws on a beguiling familiarity throughout but despite its evocative nature it remains atypical and unbridled. This is exemplified in tracks such as ‘easy’, which oscillate between laid-back yet acidulous vocally driven sections and crushing, overdriven grunge-infused choruses. Whilst elsewhere, Wayde’s heavier guitar led sections on tracks such as ‘doser’ and ‘incomplete’ call to mind The Pixies ‘Debaser’-era riffs, if they’d have had the same production of Smashing Pumpkin’s ‘Cherub Rock’. The delivery is heavy, pretty and deceptively straightforward.
Speaking about the themes behind the forthcoming EP, Miles Shawyer (bass) said, “There’s no consciously imprinted themes on the EP, however the songs were all written in a period when we were all just about to finish university and the anticipation of having to become real people and getting jobs was looming. So there’s an almost entirely unintentional coming of age/fear of adulthood theme running throughout the EP.”
It’s this charming yet almost serendipitous honesty that resonates the loudest throughout every track on the EP. The themes come naturally and candidly, whilst Wayde place their focus entirely on infectious hooks, reverb and fuzz, only abating to take rapid turns into hazy garage-punk and feedback-laden grunge.
Having dipped their toes in water with their first single, Wayde are now ready to take the plunge with a consummated EP, which will appeal to many both on and beneath the surface.

One Hidden Frame have announced they will be releasing their fifth full-length album, titled Harmful Content, on March 17, 2017 through Bird Attack Records.
The album can be pre-ordered now through Bandcamp, where you can also stream the first single “Exploding Head Syndrome.”
Formed in 2002 right next to the Russian border in Lappeenranta, Finland: One Hidden Frame delivers a mix of melancholic 90s skate punk and melodic hardcore without fear of adding emotion to their music.
Having been around over a decade, as well as having gone through some line-up changes in recent years, One Hidden Frame are more active than ever as they develop a heavier, more aggressive sound that will resonate with fans of Propagandhi.
After a couple of European tours and a career highlight of performing at Punk Rock Holiday 1.5, this Finnish quartet is eager to reach more listeners around the world.
On March 24, Don Giovanni Records will release the self-titled debut album by Brooklyn, NY indie-pop outfit, Kissing is a Crime. You can now listen to the band’s song “Kids” via Post Trash.
Listen to “Kids” via Post-Trash
Kissing is a Crime was conceived by singer/guitarist Matt Molnar back in 2012, but formally coalesced only in the last year or so. The intervening time was spent writing, demoing, perfecting, and planning.
Raised in New Jersey, Molnar spent his formative years performing in punk and hardcore groups before relocating to Brooklyn where he co-founded the bands Soft Black, Friends, and Pagan Rituals. At the same time, the singer/guitarist was accumulating material for a different type of project — one that would draw from his background in DIY and punk, but also tones of vintage guitar pop.
Listen to “Sheila’s Gone” via CLRVYNT
When Molnar arrived in New York City during the mid-00s, there wasn’t much context for the music he was pining to play. While playing in other people’s bands, he met singer/bassist Beatrice Rothbaum, an NYC native with a similar sensibility. Soon, Molnar began sharing his bedroom recordings with Rothbaum and they encouraged each other’s writing.
After a few fits and starts the duo honed their songwriting and brought it to life with a full band, which at the present includes guitarist Larry Sass-Ainsworth, and drummer Alex Feldman. The record consists of 11 songs recorded at SpeakerSonic Studio by Jarvis Taveniere (Woods) and produced by Molnar. The songs are new, but also the product of years of tinkering and exploration. “Basically, I was trying to do this band during every band that I’ve been in,” says Molnar. “This is the band I’ve been trying to do for a long time”

Check out their song and music video for ‘Deadweight’ here. The band have upcoming UK tour dates in March with Lower Than Atlantis and North American dates in April/May with As It Is.

German melodic skate punkers Straightline have released a music video for their song “Generation Lost” (watch it now on YouTube). The song is taken from the band’s new album, Vanishing Values, available now through the Bird Attack Records’ Bandcamp.
Since the bands inception in the late ’90s, Straightline have been dousing the punk scene with a unique thrash metal / melodic punk sound with tons of blistering solos, blast beats and aggressive vocals to invigorate any fan of fast skate punk. The quartet, who reside in Munich, Germany, have three full-lengths and three EPs under their belt, filled with fiery metal riffs built on a punk rock backbone.
Having toured several times throughout Europe, Latin America, Japan and played festivals such as Punk Rock Holiday and Mighty Sounds, these guys are anything but rookies; they are veterans of shred and their continuing fan base growth brings in metal-heads and punk-rockers alike. They are never afraid to throw in a unique influence to their sound whether it be reggae, funk, jazz, which seems to set them apart from their peers and it brings an interesting dynamic to their live shows as the fans seem to ebb and flow with the bands amazingly-relentless stage performance.
Their latest album Vanishing Values brings the best styles of their past releases together in a 12-song package designed for one hell of a ride.

Watch ‘Johnny’s Song’ HERE.
Reggae music from Dusseldorf, Germany? Not the sound that most people would associate with that city…. People familiar with today’s youth culture might default to images of Germany’s underground punk movement. THE TiPS began their musical journey within that scene whilst introducing elements of cozy reggae along with smooth soul into their hard driving punk songs – A process which created their unique sound and style. The punk scene have continued to follow THE TiPS throughout, whilst the band’s style has been quickly attracting a larger and more diverse fan base.
THE TiPS are deeply rooted in their local skateboard scene. Faf and Jay continue to push their own abilities while also helping to organize local contests. Recently they were honored to have Helge Tscharn, a legendary skateboard photographer, long time member of the Monster Skateboard Magazine editorial board, who currently resides in Brazil, shoot their promo photos and contribute to their press pack. Stefan ABeham who has worked with such artists as Zebrahead, Lagwagon, Authority Zero and Wilhelm Scream designed the artwork for ‘TWISTS’N’TURNS’, as well as a signature THE TiPS skateboard. The deck is sponsored by Pavel Skates and Reell Jeans and will be available in skate-shops along with a download hangtag of the album. THE TiPS are honored to be supported by Concrete Wave Cologne.
‘TWISTS’N’TURNS’ is out now on 180g Bloodred Vinyl LP, 8 page Digipak CD and Digital Download through Long Beach Records Europe.
Anti-Flag is leading the charge of political punk rock in 2017! The Pittsburgh punk band will be increasingly visible and vocal in 2017. With the follow up to 2015’s American Spring (Spinefarm) on the horizon later this year, the band continues to fight for justice and equality and fearlessly make their voices heard, especially in this changing (and increasingly terrifying) government landscape.
Put simply, A-F can’t and won’t back down.
Anti-Flag‘s Justin Sane spoke to Billboard, sharing the band’s views on our new president and the band was featured in an in-depth and eye-opening profile over at CLRVYNT.

are back. The North East four-piece punk band’s second album ‘Silence Unspeakable’ will be released 21st April, 2017 via Everything Sucks Music in the UK and Dead Broke Rekerds in the US. The band are also off on tour with Strike Anywhere and Petrol Girls in April.
Greg Robson (vocals/guitar) goes into some detail about the interim between albums and the inspiration behind ‘Silence Unspeakable’: “Since the last record (2014’s debut full length ‘Blood & Sand’) a lot has happened. There have been deaths, break-ups, marriages, births. You could actually restructure the tracks and form a loose narrative of the last three years of my life, but although there are a lot of quite sad songs on the album, don’t worry it all had a very happy ending.
As with the last offering, the songs have me writing from the heart and from personal experience. They look at finding love. Relationships and family. Finding your way, and saying goodbye. In short they are about life.
We recorded the album at Suburban Home Studios in Leeds, with Matt Johnson from Hookworms. It was recorded over two weekends in Autumn 2016. Some of the songs were written three years ago and some we finished while we were recording them. Helen Chambers kindly helped us with singing duties.”
There’s a lot to identify with in ‘Silence Unspeakable’ and the first track to be revealed ‘Inglorious’ offers a tongue-in-cheek look at going off the rails a bit, but knowing you have a lot more to offer, and hoping it is a temporary situation.
TOUR DATES (Supporting Strike Anywhere):

The Isotopes are back and about to step up to bat in fine form with their new album, ‘1994 World Series Champions’.
‘1994 World Series Champions’ is 10 crushing baseball punk anthems that showcase the Isotopes’ vast baseball acumen and sharp clubhouse wit. Throughout the record, the band makes reference to many classic moments such as Hall Of Famer George Brett shitting his pants in the lobby of the Bellagio in Las Vegas, Jose Canseco blowing his own finger off while cleaning his pistol, and the time George Constanza steamrolled Bette Midler at home plate, sending her to the hospital.
The new album sees the Isotopes link up with Destiny Records in the UK and Europe, along with long-term teammates, Stomp Records in Canada/US.
Speaking on the new partnership, Jacho, label manager of Destiny Records said, “I’m super excited to have the Isotopes join us on Destiny Records. The new album is fantastic – In fact, it’s the best Ramones-esque punk rock experience I’ve had in the last 10 years! Perfect songs and huge amounts of fun.”
Frontman, Evan October followed up with, “We never knew Europe was such a huge baseball punk town. Turns out we feel right at home over there. It’s a real honour to join an organization like Destiny Records and we just wanna go out there and play hard every night and hopefully have another big season.”
‘1994 World Series Champions’ was recorded at Atlantis Sound by Jeremy Patch. Mastered by Stu McKillop.
The band are set to tour Mainland Europe extensively this Spring, commencing on 30.03.17, with dates throughout Germany, Switzerland, Spain, France, Italy and the Netherlands.
With releases on Stomp Records, Red Scare Industries and Shake! Records previously, the Isotopes have pioneered the baseball punk movement, and cultivated a faithful legion of baseball punx worldwide with their gritty, no-bargain brand of juice-injected buzz-saw pop punk.
Truly operating like a punk rock all-star team, the Isotopes have seen over 40 players come through their ranks, including members of the Real McKenzies, Exploding F**k Dolls, Vibrators, DOA, Nervous Talk, and Dee Cracks, none of whom have played every show.
The club’s show-must-go-on ethos was famously put to action during a 2013 US tour, when singer, Evan October was detained at the US border and refused entry to the United States. Acting quickly, the ‘topes reshuffled the line-up and guitarist Dallas Duststorm stepped in on lead vocals.
“Nobody even f*****g noticed” recalls Duststorm, nearly five years later.
Subsequently, October and Duststorm were slapped with 5-year bans from entering the USA – but instead of hitting the showers, the club took a season to rebuild, and focus on dominating their home turf in Canada. Buoyed back into contention by signing to Stomp Records, the original bad boys of summer released their critically acclaimed, debut LP, Nuclear Strikezone, which features – amidst a barrage of hits – a cameo appearance by hall-of-fame ringer, Blag Dahlia of the Dwarves.
For those keeping score at home, the ‘Topes have shared the stage with some of the stiffest competition in the game such as: CJ Ramone, Pennywise, Off With Their Heads, ToyGuitar, Face To Face, The Real McKenzies, The Queers, Hanson Brothers, Zeroes, The Methadones, Teenage Bottlerocket, Chixdiggit, Swingin’ Utters, Gob, Agent Orange, Richie Ramone. 9/10 opponents agree – the ‘Topes are a force to be feared.
Showing no signs of a sophomore slump, the Isotopes Punk Rock Baseball Club heads full tilt into the 2017 season with their brand new, grand slam LP, “1994 World Series Champions” – out on April 14th through Stomp Records (CA) and Destiny Records (EU) on 12″ LP, CD and Digital Download.

Late last year The Smith Street Band promised the delivery of a new record and the band have announced their fourth album, ‘More Scared Of You Than You Are Of Me’ will be released on Friday April 7 via Specialist Subject Records in the UK. The band’s very own, newly established label Pool House Records will release the album in their native Australia.
First cut from the album, ‘Death To The Lads’, fast became a live anthem, landing #21 in triple j’s Hottest 100 and to coincide with today’s album announce The Smithies release new single ‘Birthdays’.
A song about a chance meeting on a pier in Hobart, ‘Birthdays’ opens with lead singer Wil Wagner’s familiar tug at the heartstrings, with opening line, “Spent the morning cleaning my room, in the hope you’d ask to see it soon” and paints the style of detailed narrative that we have come to expect of Wagner’s lyrics. The track also ventures into new territory, featuring a synth-laden bridge, and introducing the guest vocals of former Smith Street tour buddy Jess Locke.
The new single is accompanied by a brilliant film clip directed by Neal Walters, who was also responsible for the heartwarming video clip for ‘Death To The Lads’ which featured each band members’ mums. The ‘Birthdays’ video tells a tale of growing up, love and technology — all consistent themes throughout The Smith Street Band’s career to-date.

The eagerly awaited follow up to 2014’s breakthrough album, ‘Throw Me In The River’, was written while the band traversed the globe playing music and making friends in countless countries. From enormous festivals like Reading and Leeds (UK), Groezrock (Belgium) and Splendour in the Grass to stageless squats across Europe and American dive bars, the Smith Street Band have seen it all and they’ve poured those experiences into their boldest and most ambitious release to date.
Recorded in the picturesque surrounds of Stinson Beach, California at Panoramic House, the record also features a world class cast behind the desk. The sessions were produced by longtime friend and collaborator Jeff Rosenstock, engineered by Jack Shirley (Joyce Manor, Deafheaven, Hard Girls), mixed by John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., The Hold Steady) and mastered by Greg Calbi (Bob Dylan, Ramones, Bruce Springsteen).

Press release :
“Aptly self-labelled as “possessed punk”, the sound of SATAN translates into a crude, glacial approach that nails both extreme punk and second-wave black metal vibes. Founded in 2009 in Grenoble, France, the band has since released several splits as well as one full-length, 2015’s “L’Odeur Du Sang”.
Mixed and mastered by Today Is The Day’s mastermind Steve Austin, their punishing second album “Un Deuil Indien” (An Indian Mourning) is another departure from the band’s previous works. While still going straight to the point – barely clocking at 17 minutes – with blizzard-like riffs and drumming, the pared-down production shows SATAN at its rawest form. A feeling reinforced by the vicious, more articulated vocal delivery, highlighting absinthe-fueled, surrealist proses. Corrosive yet surprisingly anthemic, minimalist yet deep in sound and meaning, “Un Deuil Indien” is a record built on contrasts behind its apparent frightening savagery.”

FALSE ADVERTISING are pleased to announce they will release their new single ‘Not My Fault’ on the 31st March alongside news of several appearances at this year’s SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas as an official showcasing artist.
Stream here: https://soundcloud.com/
The single was picked by John Kennedy at Radio X as his Exposure Hot One last night and is the first in a run of standalone releases that the band plan to drop throughout the first half of this year, building on their caustic, fuzz-drenched approach to alternative rock carrying echoes of underground ‘90s champions Cave In, Hundred Reasons, Idlewild and Garbage.
This time around the song writing has been given a healthy shot in the arm with a dose of mainstream-friendly hooks which are new to the False Advertising arsenal; elsewhere it’s business as usual with a veritable wall of noise collapsing into a gorgeous and sombre middle eight.
Lyrically, much of the new material is about feeling held back and being out of control of your own destiny, whether it’s due to your social class, job, appearance or gender. It’s about being part of a generation who often feel they’ve been sold a lie, being limited by an authority figure’s point of view, and trying to circumnavigate those obstacles that have been placed in your way.
“We wrote this song whilst lamenting the loss of opportunity and hope that this last year’s political developments have brought to a generation,” says song writer Jen Hingley of the new track.
“Whilst the American election was reaching its gaudy climax a few months ago, I found myself more and more falling asleep on the sofa in-front of Fox News, absorbing some pretty exaggerated stuff. I wondered if by watching it, that it might break me out of my own bubble and make me a super well rounded person. But instead it just filled me with despair.”
‘Not My Fault’ was recorded across various sessions at The Northbourne Centre in Didcot, Oxfordshire, as well as Marlboro House and the band’s own house in Manchester. It was engineered by Sam Jones and Chris Warr, produced by Sam Jones and False Advertising, and mixed by Sam Jones.
‘Not My Fault’ is released on 17th March 2017

Manchester duo The Hyena Kill have revealed the video for their new single ‘Tongue Tied’ which is out now on all good digital platforms. The band also recently announced two headline shows, details below.
Featuring raw and ready artwork from Yorkshire illustrator Ben Tallon and a typically explosive live performance from the duo, the video was directed by London-based film maker Ben Ogunbiyi.
The video premiered with Upset Magazine here:
Commenting on the track, the band said: “Tongue Tied is by far the most aggressive song on the album and the most fun to play live. It’s a bit of a fuck you to all the jumped up posers & fakers who like to look down their nose at people.”
‘Tongue Tied’ is the latest material to be taken from their debut album Atomised which was released earlier last year, it’s another prime fillet steak of feral, ferocious, full-tilt rock ‘n’ roll noise – a sound the pair have meticulously crafted by striking out on their own very definite path after finding themselves falling between the cracks of Manchester’s burgeoning metal and indie scenes.
The single has so far picked up support from the likes of Kerrang! Radio, Amazing Radio, Total Rock and many more with the album receiving critical acclaim from Metal Hammer, Rock Sound, Kerrang and Louder Than War.
The Hyena Kill’s Atomised album is out now.
2017 UK Live Dates:
Sat 29th April – Nottingham – Bodega
Sun 30th April – Manchester – Academy 3
Texas’ Power Trip finally return with their most powerful effort yet – Nightmare Logic – out now on Southern Lord. Released to high critical acclaim and anticipation – their second album release does not disappoint. With hooks and tightness rivalling the likes of Metallica, Pantera or Pentagram, Power Trip punishes fans not only sonically but with pure songwriting skill. Nightmare Logic proves to be one of the year’s smartest and most crucial releases to spawn from the metal and punk scenes.
Gale’s lyrics reflect that aggression by honing in on the devaluation of human life by those who’ve gained power through money and politics. By creating a broad dissection of human suffering above reproach from personal agendas, the lyrics attempt to unify and inspire listeners. Taking cues from Discharge and Crass in Margaret Thatcher’s UK, Nightmare Logic delivers poignant social information directly into those homes engulfed in the sour turn of global politics towards right-wing agendas.

Following on from the UK release of the critically acclaimed album ‘Apparition Sound’ the brand new single, ‘The Witching Hour’ is a continuation of frontman, Tank’s full creative vision for the future of Energy.
Speaking on the single, Tank says, “I’m really excited for people to hear “The Witching Hour” because I think Energy really needed a song like this. I think with this song, we’re perpetuating this unconscious idea of what people think the band should sound like based off of either our image and aesthetic, or what our songs have merely hinted at in the past. The song sounds and feels familiar as though it had already been written by Energy, yet nothing in our catalogue sounds quite like it. In my opinion, “The Witching Hour” is one of our strongest and most intense songs, and I can see it being a fixture in our live set for a long time.”
‘The Witching Hour’ was recorded and produced by Chris Curran (Four Year Strong, PVRIS, A Loss For Words, It Lives It Breathes) at “Reclaim Studios” in Thompson, CT.
Listen to ‘The Witching Hour’ here: https://youtu.be/
Energy formed in February of 2006 in the town of Stoughton, Massachusetts. Over the last decade, Energy’s signature style of somber, melancholy melodies and introspective lyrics combined with infectiously poppy hooks has truly cemented them as one of Boston’s most unique bands.
The band were unveiled as special guests on the Creeper headline tour by That’s Not Metal Podcast on December 23rd and will be hitting Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds, London, Southampton, Birmingham and Cardiff this spring. The dates will be in support the new album, ‘Apparition Sound’, which was released in the UK in early February and brand new single, ‘The Witching Hour’.
After independently releasing their 2006 E.P. “Punch The Clock”, the band immediately developed a cult following and signed with Boston’s own “Bridge 9 Records” to release their 2008 full-length album ‘Invasions Of The Mind’, as well as their 2010 E.P. ‘Walk Into The Fire’.
‘The Witching Hour’ is out now and available through all usual digital platforms.

March 18 – Manchester, Retro Bar
April 14 – London, New Cross Inn (Dugstock)

About Darko: If ever there was a time for a true global resurgence of punk rock, that time would be now. As the current wave of pop nostalgia wears off and more and more forward-thinking, liberal, young creatives wake up to a very different, and altogether darker, political, social, and environmental reality, people will be searching for a sound to define their time. Darko’s new album, Bonsai Mammoth, will be there waiting.
Echoing the intensity of their music, the subject matter of the Guildford, UK skate-punks’ new record suitably shines a light on the big issues we all currently face, and encapsulates all of the modern age frustrations that are now ripe for exploitation by our best and brightest punk bands. This time around, the band have taken a step back from the narrative weaved through earlier EPs to focus inwardly on more personal subject matter, although they aren’t ruling out returning to their familiar concept-style records any time soon.
Hitting the studio with a whole new perspective Darko worked with producer Daly George (Creeper, Milk Teeth, Giants), who helped them navigate through their new approach to song-writing and to experiment with new sounds and ideas. The final touches were provided in the mastering process by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Iron Reagan, Poison Idea, Stranger Things).
“We felt a lot more relaxed recording this album compared to last EP’s and hopefully that comes across,” explains guitarist Chris Brown “It certainly made things run smoother for me. We also had more time to mess about with sounds and effects that we don’t normally do, as well as giving me time to work on my right-hand technique for the technical sections.”
On the new album, Darko’s signature duelling guitar engines increased the intensity and intricacy of their playing once more. Out to prove that the band are not just a speed-driven, one-trick pony, they’re intent on proving themselves to be musicians skilled enough to make layers of mind-bending, racing guitars mesh cohesively with impactful songwriting.
Couple that with their versatile rhythm section rumbling along at a heart-racing pace, and front man Dan Smith’s vocals stretching to their limit with a coarse delivery, it’s an album that’s packed full of all the satisfying choruses, mosh-pit moments and gang-vocal sing-a-longs that you’d expect from a fun-filled Darko live performance.
With musical salutes to riff-thrashers like Protest The Hero, straight-up skate punk legends Strung Out and the melodic hardcore of Comeback Kid, Bonsai Mammoth delivers wholeheartedly and shows a real progression to the band’s sound, a continuation of a journey this band of DIY brothers are only just beginning.
They’ve refined their sound, toured worldwide and grown a frenzied fan base, and whilst the positive moments might have been punctured by recent world events, disrupted by dark politics and tinged with a forbidding sense of general unease, this record serves as an audible barometer for exactly what’s going on right now in our troubled world. This era and this album combine to create the perfect coming of age conditions for Darko’s particular brand of punk, but maybe also just for punk in general.
