Back in 2001, FPM Zine managed to chat to Gavin Hammon, drummer of the awesome ska punk band, Dance Hall Crashers. Here’s that interview from way back then…
So who are the Dance Hall Crashers and what do you do?
We’re a band and we play songs we enjoy playing. More pertinent info can be found at www.dancehallcrashers.com
How would you like best describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard you before?
Well we’ve got influences in punk, rock, ska, metal, klezmer, polka, R&B, latin, avantgarde, film score and honkytonk. Throw in a pot with two female singers and three other guys and that’s about it. Again, more pertinent info at the website.
Which album of yours would be the best representation and your favourite?
The live record is about all we are capable of.
Who would be the best bands you have toured/played with?
NOFX, The Bosstones, Third Eye Bline, Blink, No Doubt, MxPx, Hi Standard, Spring Heeled Jack, Limp, Reverend Horton, that sorta thing…
How did you enjoy being part of the Warped tour? And which countries did it take you to?
Well, in Europe we took in Italy, Spain, The UK (well Britain), Germany, Holland and some others I can’t recall. It was fun, we enjoyed it.
How did these countries receive the Dance Hall Crashers?
They received us audibly. Hopefully they enjoyed it. Seemed not to hate it, anyway…
Any funny on stage moments?
Always something funny that happens on stage, despite whether or not anyone else would find them amusing.
What’s the inspiration in having two lead female singers?
No inspiration. Simply a question of logistics and routine. Worked out well from the get-go and we’ve been doing it long enough with Elyse and Karina that we wouldn’t think of changing things.
What’s the creative process like for you?
It’s like a pool of cool water for me.
So what is the band up to right now?
We’re up to taking a little time off currently.
Do you feel that your connection with Rancid has aided your success at all?
Not as such, nope. If anything it’s confused folks…
Any plans to tour over here in the UK soon?
Not soon, unfortunately. Possibly sometime next year, although nothing is planned.
What inspired the Dance Hall Crashers to form?
Nothing really. Just sort of began.
How do you see the band in 10 years from now?
Still with eyes, but we’d be much older and much more flaccid.
What albums are on your stereo currently?
A few Bill Hicks bootlegs, some Emitt Rhodes, some Elvis Costello, some Return To Forever, that sorta thing.
Where can people contact the Dance Hall Crashers?
Please visit www.dancehallcrashers.com. Thanks!
Thanks go to Gavin for chatting with us.
