The Governors Ball Music Festival (commonly known as Governors Ball, Gov Ball or Gov Ball NYC) is a multi-day music festival held on Randall’s Island in New York City. Launched in 2011, the festival features an array of genres and styles of music, including rock, electronic, hip-hop, indie, Americana, pop, folk, and more.
This year, Governor’s Ball 2015 took place June 5–7, 2015 and was headlined by Florence and the Machine, Lana Del Rey, Björk, St. Vincent, Marina and The Diamonds, My Morning Jacket, Ryan Adams, The Decemberists, Death from above 1979, Vance Joy, Gorgon City, Benjamin Booker, Priory, Black Pistol Fire, Clean Bandit, Atmosphere, Flume, Ryan Adams, Royal Blood, Drake, The Black Keys, Deadmau5, Rae Sremmurd, Mø, Charli XCX, DIIV, and other artists.
Even the constant drizzle of rain couldn’t keep fans away; luckily the concert staff well prepared the grounds for such weather with tents and rubber walkways. Most attendees came well equipped with mud boots and the ones who didn’t were able to frogger off the rubber pads (lovingly nicknamed the Yellow Brick Road) to get to a dry area.
The food was delicious and there was even a coconut tent selling young coconut with a straw and spoon—my favorite!
The best performance was by Weird Al! I was impressed that such a legend was so down to earth and gave a performance of a lifetime—with constant set and costume changes.
Black Keys had a huge turnout, as did Noel Gallagher–both stunningly incredible performances with excellent lighting and back video. Noel’s “Champagne Supernova” was nostalgic—watching kids laying on the grass smoking and watching the performance was surreal. Fan’s singing “while we were getting high” seemed irrevocably relevant.
The music was diverse ranging from punk rockers White Lung to rocker Ryan Adams, country artists Sturgill Simpson, Bjork’s unique Icelandic sound, and EDM Deadmau5.
Backstage Liv Tyler, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Heidi Klum were rumored to be in attendance.
During Drake’s set a fan jumped on stage. In a casual tone Drake proclaimed “You about to get served boy” as security guards escorted him off the stage. Aside from that drama, and minus Madonna, Drake’s set mirrored his Coachella performance.
Deadmau5 played great hits and remixes of classics such as “Maths” to “Ghosts and Stuff”.
